Yarm and Eaglescliffe’s good form continued last Saturday with a comfortable 2-0 win over Billingham Synthonia at Bedford Terrace
Match Report from Sam Robson
A game which saw Y&E go 12 games unbeaten started off at an extraordinary pace, which had Y&E two goals to the good in under five minutes. The first from Ste Roberts was a cheeky lob over ex Y&E keeper Will Lawrence. Ste just managed to stay onside after a cushioned header from Dan Jones found him in space. Great eagerness from the boys straight after the restart was instantly rewarded as the play was stretched wonderfully by the Y&E using the whole of the pitch and a ball was fizzed into the box and spilled by the Synners keeper setting it up perfectly for centurion Sam Conway to simply slot away to mark his 100th appearance with a goal. 2-0 up after 5 minutes

At this point, the game was already looking out of reach for Synners as they were shellshocked by our rapid start, many would have been thinking it could have been 4 or 5-nil by half time. But that wasn’t the case, Synners players seemed to find themselves after going two behind, making it difficult for the Y&E. There was a couple of late challenges, the first one to result in a card came from Jack Lamb for Synners taking Titch out completely from behind which caused a lengthy delay in which Titch received treatment.
The final chance of the half fell sweetly for Ste Roberts just inside the box who must’ve seen his name in big neon lights as he struck the ball magnificently on the volley only for the ball to whistle narrowly past the post. If he hadn’t of hit it so sweetly it would have been a goal. Y&E went into the break two ahead but feeling like it could have been more.
Credit must be given to Synners for holding off Y&E for the entirety of the second half and having a few good chances of their own, still nothing to really trouble Callum Roberts other than one off the bar from striker Dan Dryden . Tom Atkinson came on for Y&E with about 25 minutes to go and must have been reading the Ste Roberts book of volleys as he let loose from 45 yards out forcing Will Lawrence to tip his audacious effort out for a Y&E corner. Tom must’ve been in one of those moods as another of his long efforts went close only minutes later. After cutting his losses on the longshots Tom reverted to close range finishing and would likely have been rewarded with a goal if not for an unfortunate slip in the box at a vital moment.

The Y&E were not made to rue missed chances as their two early strikes were enough to take all three points from Synners, and with Tow Law, Eash Winning and Prudhoe all picking up points, it was a disappointing afternoon for the visitors. As for the Y&E, it was another win in the league, keeping us top but Redcar Town are still the team to beat, with games in hand in second place. The win sees Jacko an the boys keeping the pressure on them as the league season enters its final stages.
