Match Preview

Newcastle University (h)

FA Vase 1st Qualifying round

Saturday 23rd August 3pm ko

The road to Wembley for the Y&E starts on Saturday 23rd August at Bedford Terrace. Newcastle university are the visitors to Bedford Terrace (TS23 4AE) in the Izuzu FA Vase first qualifying round. The match kicks off at 3pm with gates open from 2pm. The match is kindly sponsored by John Coulson, home & away Y&E supporter & one of our committee room hosts. Matchball sponsor is another of our home & away supporters Jim Topping. Than you both for your support, it is massively appreciated.

Also at the game are Prissick Rovers City U10s who will be running out with the Y&E and no doubt providing plenty of vocal support for the Y&E. We hope you all enjoy your trip to Bedford Terrace.

Last season in our debut in the Vase, we lost 2-0 in the first qualifying round away at Shildon. A crazy first half saw Shildon reduced to 10 men, miss penalties and take the lead. We’ll be hoping for a better result this weekend, with the winner facing a trip to either Horden CW or Pickering Town. This match is being played Friday night.

Newcastle Uni are always difficult opponents. Full of skilful players with plenty of energy. Last season we won 3-1 away with one of our better away performances of the season. The home game between Christmas & New Year finished 1-1. Dan jones scoring on 59mins, but a late late stoppage time goal from Joe Alderson grabbed a point for the visitors.

This season Uni have a good start to the league campaign. They are currently sat in sixth place, on 14 pts from 8 games. They grabbed a 97th minute equaliser away at Grangetown last Saturday & followed that up with a 4-0 home win over Tow Law on Thursday night. From their last five, they are LDWDW.

With no midweek game for the Y&E there has been a bit of a break from the early season fixtures. Last time out was a 1-0 away defeat against FC Hartlepool. Squad wise, there are a few injury concerns. Adam Groom is still out with a foot injury, and Sam Conway injured his arm away at FC Hartlepool last week. No oasis concerts this weekend to impact squad selection.

A reminder that season tickets are not valid for the FA Vase. Entry is £6 for adults, £4 concessions and accompanied U16s are free entry. As ever there is a printed match programme on sale. A wide range of refreshments in the cafe available as well as a chance to win a bottle of wine in the half time draw. Printed match programme available at the game

The game is an excellent opportunity for the lads to bounce back after last Saturday’s first league defeat and start us off on cup run. The weather forecast is once again looking good for Bedford Terrace. With no Boro home game, get yourself to Bedford Terrace for your Saturday football fix. We look forward to seeing you there.

Howay the mighty Y&E ⚪️🔵🦅
