Y&E produced a dominant performance to secure an emphatic 5–0 victory over Prudhoe, with Dan Jones leading the charge with a superb hat-trick in a one-sided contest.
Report by Elliott Desage
The visitors started brightly looking to apply pressure. However, Y&E quickly grew into the game and nearly took the lead when Sam Conway struck the post on 11 minutes. Just a minute later, Prudhoe goalkeeper Sam Wilson was called into action, making an important save to keep the scores level.
Both teams continued to push forward with attacking intent. However the breakthrough arrived in the 15th minute when Harry Williams finished calmly in the bottom corner after being set up by Harry Stewart-Titchner, giving Y&E a deserved 1–0 lead.
Both sides created chances before the break. Steven Roberts saw an effort saved by Sam Wilson on 29 minutes, whilst Y&E goalkeeper Callum Roberts produced a ‘save of the season’ contender tipping a great effort by Prudhoe onto the crossbar two minutes later to deny the away team an equaliser. Y&E nearly doubled their lead late in the half when Sam Wilson pushed Dan Jones’ header away from goal following a corner resulting in the Y&E going into the break leading 1–0.
The second half began with a booking for Prudhoe’s Jordan Plunkett after a cynical challenge on Dan Jones, and Y&E immediately capitalised. From the resulting free kick, Dan Jones reacted quickest to the ball hitting the woodwork from Steven Roberts’ free kick 45 seconds in the second half to make it 2–0.
Y&E continued to press. Williams forced another strong save from the Prudhoe keeper in the 48th minute, while further corners and pressure kept the visitors pinned back.
The third goal arrived on 61 minutes when Dan Jones rose highest to head home from Ethan Jones’ beautiful first-time cross. Just four minutes later, Jones struck again with another header, this time assisted by Williams, almost a carbon copy to the third goal, completing his hat-trick and extending Y&E’s lead to 4–0.
Both teams made several substitutions as the match progressed, with Foster Garton, Joe Scaife-Wheatley and Cameron Thomson all introduced for Y&E.
Y&E remained very much the dominant force and were awarded a penalty in the 77th minute, and Joe Dalton stepped up confidently placing it well into the top right corner, making it 5–0 and putting the result beyond doubt. Dalton was then replaced shortly after by Charlie Fixter.
Prudhoe did manage to get an effort on goal, but Callum Roberts made another solid save to preserve the clean sheet. Tempers briefly flared in the 82nd minute with Fixter and Prudhoe captain Freddie Marr both receiving bookings, before Y&E finished strongly with further attacking pressure.
In the end, Y&E’s clinical finishing and defensive solidity proved too much for Prudhoe, sealing a well-earned victory.
Y&E will now look to Tuesday as they host Billingham Town in the Ernest Armstrong League as they continue their defence of the title. The following they will have another home game, this time hosting Billingham Synthonia.
