U21s late comeback seals impressive win vs league leaders

The U21s produced a fantastic late comeback, scoring 3 second half goals to seal an impressive 3-2 win at home against Seaton Carew reserves.

With the first team game postponed due to weather, Conyers was the place to be to get your Y&E fix. It was strong U21 line up, who were looking to get something from Seaton, who were league leaders.

The game kicked off in the midst of a mini monsoon and early on Seaton were on top. They looked a strong experienced team and had some pace and nous up front. They took the lead early on, a quick break and their forward Leon Griffiths was on hand to score on 14mins. They doubled their lead in 27mins, a break from a Y&E corner caught us out and Liam Abbey was on hand to score to make it 2-0.

We had a few chances up front, but were unable to convert. The rain was throwing it down now, making it difficult to play in and difficult to watch and take notes on the phone! Half time, two goals down and we had been second best.

Out for the second half and we made a changes. Joe Powell on up front for Grant. The game continued as it had in the first half. We were working hard, but couldn’t get much going. Another sub was made, Jordan Fletcher on for Jonathan Baines, with James Nicholson moving to left back. As we got towards 70mins, we got one back, some hardwork from Joe Powell, who won the ball and crossed over, where Sean Earl was on hand to score. A bit of momentum for the Y&E. That goal gave us some confidence and we looked to push forward. 75mins and we got another, Jordan Fletcher with a shot from distance which took a deflection and looped over the keeper and in to the back of the net. 2-2. The U21s kept the pressure on, and were looking the most likely to score. In goal Cody made a few good stops and Seaton Carew looked to grab a winner.

Into the last 5 minutes and it was the Y&E who grabbed a late winner. A ball over in to the box, a bit of scramble and Ste Innes was on hand to score to make it 3-2. The lads held on for the last few minutes to make sure of the victory.

An impressive comeback for the Y&E against a very good Seaton Carew side. At 2-0 down with 20mins or so left, it didn’t look likely, but credit to the lads. They stayed in the game, took their chances and ended up winning the game in brutal weather conditions.

We’ve got a cracking group of players in that U21 group. Ali and BG are doing a brilliant job with them as a management duo. If you get the chance, get down to one of their games to watch them. Next up is an away trip to Redcar Town U23s next Saturday.
